Abstract: Sliding mode control provides insensitivity to parameter variations and complete rejection of disturbances. However, this property is only valid in the sliding phase. Sliding surface design can be used to improve controller performance by minimizing or eliminating the time to reach the sliding phase. In this study, we review and classify the methods available in the literature for sliding surface design focusing on single-input systems. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2015.
