Buildings and monuments built using natural stone throughout the history constitute an important part of immovable cultural heritage (Sabbioni et al., 2012: 74). However various factors including material deterioration cause considerable damage to these buildings (Doehne and Price, 2010: 16; Fitzner, 2004: 677). Diagnostic studies for the determination of factors and processes causing material deterioration are important before the selection of proper conservation practices (Paoletti et al., 2012: 116; Gulec, 2012: 61, Cardell et al., 2003: 165).en_US
In this study, monumental tomb no: 175 in Northern Necropolis of Hierapolis was investigated by visual decay mapping and soluble salt spot tests for the diagnosis of deterioration problems before the selection of proper conservation practices. Based on the visual analysis of the type and distribution of decay forms and results of spot tests, main factors causing material deterioration were found to be dampness, soluble salts and incompatible materials used in former repairs. At the end of the study some recommendations were proposed for the elimination of deterioration sources to prevent further decay. This study represents an example for the importance of the diagnostic studies before the conservation interventions.en_US
