Abstract: The ancient city of Laodikeia, situated in the centre of the Lykos Valley in southwest Phrygia, was settled from the Early Chalcolithic period through Late Antiquity, when it was largely abandoned after a severe earthquake during the reign of Emperor Focas. The pottery culture of Late Antiquity has been revealed to a great extent thanks to ongoing scientific excavations in the concerned strata. When Christianity was given freedom in the fourth century and thus stepped into the daily life of people it also introduced partial changes into the pottery repertory and decorative style. These changes can be tracked especially on the unguentaria, ampullae and lamps. Furthermore, imported wares such as African, Sagalassos and Phokaian Red Slip Ware were attested and they may cast light onto the commercial relations of the period. In addition to the imported wares, local production red slip wares were clearly attested through clay analyses and archaeological evidence, thus integrated into the new pottery repertory of Late Antiquity. Among evidence of local pottery production at Laodikeia during Late Antiquity can be cited the slagged kiln wastes, potsherds and flooring bricks with workshop stamps.
