Laodikeia Roma dönemi mimari bezemeleri

Abstract

Laodikeia, Denizli İli’nin 6 km kuzeyinde; Eskihisar, Goncalı, Bozburun mahalleleri sınırları içinde yer alır. Antik yazarlar Hellenistik kentin daha önceleri Rhoas ve Diospolis adlarıyla bilinen erken yerleşimlerin üzerine kurulduğunu iletirken, Roma Dönemi’ne gelindiğinde kent, bölgenin metropolü ve ticaret merkezi olmasının etkisiyle giderek zenginleşmiş ve refah düzeyini arttırmıştır. Bu bağlamda sanat ve kültür alanlarında da gelişimini sürdüren Laodikeia, kentteki imar faaliyetleri ile bu gücünü yansıtmıştır. Roma Dönemi’nde yaşanan yoğun inşa faaliyetlerinin kaçınılmaz bir sonucu olarak kentin mimariye bağlı bezeme alanında geniş bir bezeme portföyü bulunmaktadır. Çalıştığımız malzemenin ana konusunu oluşturan mimari bezeme kavramı göz önüne alındığında; Laodikeia’nın kültürel ve kronolojik bilgilerini taşıyan ve “dönemlerin” stil-motif hazinesinin karakteristiği haline gelen estetik/ekonomik bir üretim ifadesi olarak tarihleme veya yapının inşaat süreçleri ile ilgili oldukça önemli yorumlara ulaşılmıştır. Bu bağlamda, Laodikeia yapılarına ait bezeme portföyünün kronolojik ve mekânsal niteliklerinin değerlendirilmesi ile birlikte bir form repertuarı ortaya çıkarılmış, mekân dekorasyonlarında kullanılmış olan tekil bezeme unsurlarının tipolojik sınıflandırmasının yapılmasının yanı sıra, zaman içerisinde değişen kentsel estetiğin de dönem modasına hangi ölçüde bağlı kaldığı ortaya konmuştur. Laodikeia’nın Roma İmparatorluğu merkezi yönetimi ile oluşturduğu sıkı ilişki ve ekonomik gücü sayesinde “taşra” üslubundan uzak, yer yer “Roma Merkez” etkili ve çoğunlukla mimarlık ve sanat alanında Anadolu’nun önde gelen metropol kentlerinin mimari bezeme anlayışına uygun özellikler yansıtan üretimler gerçekleştirdiği anlaşılmaktadır.

Laodikeia, which is located in the west end of Phrygia, 6 km. northeast of modern Denizli within the borders of Eskihisar, Goncalı and Bozburun districts. Ancient sources state that the Hellenistic city was founded on top of an earlier settlement called Diospolis and Rhoas, thanks to become a metropolis and trade center of the region in Roman period increased the city’s prosperity. In this context, Laodikeia, which raised its improvement in the fields of art and culture, reflected it with construction activities in the city. As an inevitable consequence of the intensive construction activities in the Roman period, the city has an extensive portfolio of architectural decoration. Considering the architectural decoration which constitutes the main subject of this study; As an expression of aesthetic / economic production, which provides the cultural and chronological knowledge of Laodikeia, has become the characteristic of the style-motif repertory of “periods” and significant comments have been made regarding the construction processes of the building activities. In this context, a form repertoire was created by evaluating the chronological and spatial characteristics of the Laodikeia’s architectural decoration, typological classification of the individual decoration elements used in building decorations has been made and the extent to which the urban aesthetics which have changed over time is dependent on the period fashion has been revealed. Thanks to the close relationship with the Roman central governance and economic power, Laodikeia produced its architectural decorations distant from the “rural” style, partly under the influence of “Imperial Center”, and mostly reflect the architectural decoration tradition of the leading metropolitan cities of Anatolia.
