The scope of this Ph. D. thesis was the synthesis of 6 new water-soluble zinc phthalocyanines derivatives in three batches which make absorption in near-IR region and may be used for photodynamic therapy applications. Two phthalocyanines compounds were synthesized in each batch and one of them was peripheral and the other was non-peripheral. Phthalocyanines derivatives was intended to be dissolved in water and they are selected accordingly to have different substitutes to give water soluble property. The synthesized phthalocyanine compounds have been selected chalcogens such as O and S which will allow their near-IR absorption in the region. The effect of absorption was investigated in these atoms. For the same reason, the effect of locations on absorption was also emphasized. For this reason, phthalocyanines was synthesized using Click reaction in three batches. In first batch, phthalocyanines bearing oxygen donor was synthesized using tetraethylene glycol derivative. In second batch, phthalocyanines bearing sulfur donor and containing carboxylic acid, was synthesized by adding tetraethylene glycol derivative. In third batch, phthalocyanines bearing oxygen donor, containing carboxylic acid and having a long chain alkyl group was obtained. These novel compounds have been characterized by a combination of elemental analysis, FT-IR, 1H and 13C NMR, MS spectrometer and UV–Vis spectrophotometer techniques. The synthesized phthalocyanines had high solubility in water as desired. The effects of calcogen atoms on the absorption of peripheral and non-peripheral positions were determined and new zinc phthalocyanines suitable for photodynamic therapy were introduced into the literature.en_US
