An analysis of Virginia Woolf's To the Lighthouse from the point of narration

Abstract

VI Bu çalışma, 20.yy'ın yazarlarından olan Virginia Woolf un Denizfeneri (To the Lighthouse) adlı eserinin " anlatı yapısı" ve "anlatı söylemi" incelenerek, yazarın, eserinde anlatı tekniğini ve anlatı deyişini nasıl oluşturduğunu bulmayı amaçlamaktadır. Bu nedenle de çalışma; yapısal ve söylemsel anlatı olarak iki ana modele dayandırılmıştır. Tezin ilk bölümünde, çalışmanın ana noktaları verilirken, sayıltılar, veriler ve amaçlar ortaya konmuştur. Anlatı ile ilgili teoriler ışığında tezin ikinci bölümü düzenlenmiştir. Diğer bir deyişle, anlatı konusunda yapılan belli başlı çalışmalar özetlenmiştir. Tezin üçüncü bölümünde, öncelikle anlatı yapısı, olay örgüsü ve anlatı öyküsü hakkında kısa bilgiler verilerek, yukarıda belirtilen teoriler yardımıyla Woolf un Denizfeneri' ndeki olay örgüsünü nasıl oluşturduğu, olayları ve öyküyü anlatı içine nasıl yerleştirdiği, anlatı zamanını nasıl kullandığı ve eserdeki karakterleri nasıl sunduğu eserden örneklerle açıklanmaya çalışılmıştır. Dördüncü bölüm ise; romanın 'anlatı söylemi' incelenmiştir. Bu bölümde en önemli nokta konuşma ve düşünce aktarım yöntemlerini kullanarak Woolf un nasıl bir anlatı kurmaya çalıştığı, 20. yy' da romanda kullanılan tekniklerden biri olan "Bilinç Akışı" tekniğiyle bağlantılı olarak ortaya koyulmaya çalışılmıştır. Beşinci bölümde, 20.yy romanının genel özellikleri gözden geçirilerek, Virginia Woolf un eserlerinin teknikleri üzerindeki etkileri açıklanmış ve yazarın Denizfeneri adlı romanının anlatısında kullandığı ve kendine has olarak değerlendirilen "anlatı dili" ve "anlatı tekniği" anlatı yapısı ve söylemi ışığında belirlenmeye çalışılmıştır. The aim of this dissertation is to investigate Virginia Woolf s narrative style and technique in her novel, To the Lighthouse by analysing the narrative structure and narrative discourse that she uses in order to construct her novel. Therefore, the analysis in this thesis is based on two main topics; one is "narrative structure" and the other is, "narrative discourse". In the first chapter of the thesis, the main points of the study are introduced and the hypothesis, the aim the method, the scope and data are explained. The theories of narrative are given in the second chapter of the thesis. In other words, the other various studies of narrative are introduced. In the third chapter, the elements of narrative in the narrative structure, are introduced and with the help of these elements, the narrative structure of To the Lighthouse are shown by using plot, narrative story, narrative time and characters with examples taken from the novel. On the other hand, in the fourth part of the thesis, the narrative discourse of the novel is analysed. In this part, the main point of interest was on Woolf s narrative discourse and her use of 'speech and thought' representation in her novel. Woolf s narrative is also analysed in terms of 'stream of consciousness ' which is one of the techniques used in the20l Century novel. In the fifth chapter, the 20th Century novel is reviewed in terms of Woolf s narrative language and technique, which is considered as unique, within the framework of her narrative structure and narrative discourse.
