Ideology and conflict in John le Carre's novels; The Spy Who came in from the Cold and a Most Wanted Man

Abstract

Bu tezin ana konusu John le Carré'nin Soğuktan Gelen Casus ve Aranan Adam romanlarında düşman, ideoloji ve çatışma kavramlarını incelemektir. Romanlar, Soğuk Savaş döneminden 11 Eylül saldırıları sonrası döneme Batı kültüründeki düşman algısı değişimini açıkça yansıtmaktadır. Bu bağlamda Batı kültürünün düşman ihtiyacı John le Carré'nin Soğuktan Gelen Casus ve Aranan Adam romanlarında yapısökücülük tekniği uygulanarak incelenebilir. İlk bölüm, her iki romanın öykülerini ve genel çerçevesini incelemek ve analiz etmek için kullanılan İkinci Dünya Savaşı sonrası durum, Soğuk Savaş, Soğuk Savaş Sonrası dönem ve 11 Eylül Sonrası dönemin ana hatlarını sunmaktadır. İkinci bölüm ideoloji kavramını tanıtır, casus romanları ile ilgili kısa bir tanımlama yapar ve yapısökücülük tekniğini ele alır. Üçüncü ve Dördüncü bölümler tamamıyla John le Carré'nin Soğuktan Gelen Casus ve Aranan Adam romanlarına ve eleştirel analizlerine ayrılmıştır. Bu tezin amacı, John le Carré'nin Soğuktan Gelen Casus ve Aranan Adam romanlarının Batı kültüründeki düşman ihtiyacını nasıl yansıttığını ve John le Carré'nin bu kavramı romanlarında nasıl uyguladığını sorgulamaktır. Bu bağlamda, bu tez gizli servis çalışanlarının hayatlarına ve toplum içerisinde yaşadıkları kişisel çelişkilere vurgu yaparak Batı kültüründeki düşman ihtiyacını inceler.

The main topic of this study is to analyse the concepts of enemy, ideology and conflict in John le Carré's The Spy Who Came in from the Cold and A Most Wanted Man. The novels clearly reflect the change of the enemy in Western culture from the Cold War Period to Post 9/11 World. In this sense, the need for an enemy in Western culture may be analysed by deconstructing The Spy Who Came in from the Cold and A Most Wanted Man by John le Carré. Chapter One presents an outline of the situation after World War II and the Cold War, the Post-Cold War period and Post 9/11 world which are used to criticise and analyse the frames and stories of both novels. Chapter two introduces the concept of ideology, gives a brief description of espionage novels and presents the deconstruction technique. Chapter three and four are devoted to the novels by John le Carré; The Spy Who Came in from the Cold and A Most Wanted Man and their critical analysis. The purpose of this thesis is to assert how John le Carré's The Spy Who Came in from the Cold and A Most Wanted Man reflect the need for enemy in western culture and le Carré uses this concept in his novels. Therefore, this thesis analyses this need for enemy in the western culture by putting emphasis on the lives of the agents of intelligence services and their personal clashes inside the society.
