Abstract: The objective of this study was to investigate the influence of nano boron nitride (n-BN) particles on the bonding performance of Araldite 2014-2 adhesive. The adhesive was reinforced with varying amounts (0.5, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0, and 3.0 wt%) of n-BN particles for testing purposes. To evaluate the bonding performance, single lap joints (SLJ) were formed by joining aluminum (Al-2024 T3) and glass fiber-reinforced polymer (GFRP) plates, followed by lap-shear tests for comparison. The experimental test results showed that adding n-BN particles to adhesive increased bonding strength. The maximum increase in shear strength was achieved as similar to 11% in the sample bonded with 1 wt% n-BN filled Araldite 2014. Moreover, a further increase in nanoparticle amount in the adhesive resulted decrease in the bonding strength of the adhesive. It has been found that n-BN additions of more than 1 wt% lead to increased irregularities in the samples' nanostructures and lower mechanical performance. A sample containing 3 wt% n-BN yielded a minimum shear strength of 8.54 MPa, which is a 14.6% reduction from the highest shear strength value.
