Abstract: Many engineering fields, including tribology, seek to use or alter the behaviour of the system at the surface or at the interface between surfaces. Thus, the topography of the surface is of great interest and must be included in finite element analysis. Until nowadays, surface roughness effects were ignored in the analysis, due to the difficulty to generate a rough surface model and also to simplify the model in order to reduce calculation time. However, in many engineering application, such as press fit, the behaviour of the surface or the interface between surfaces are important. Thus, with the advance of numerical capabilities, the topography of the surface should be included in finite element simulations. This work presents a stress analysis for press fitted shaft-hub connections with different surface roughness in commercial finite element software.
