Title: Diagnosis and follow-up of eyelid hemangioma with TC-99M RBC scintigraphy

Abstract: Vasculogenic lesions are common orbital lesions in newborns and young infants and the appearance of these lesions at computerized tomographic and magnetic rezonance imaging reflects their pathologic features. The most prevalent of these are infantile hemangioma, a true neoplasm, and venous-lymphatic malformation, a developmental anomaly. We aimed to evaluate Tc-99m labeled red blood cells scintigraphy as a diagnostic method for orbital hemangioma in an infant. Case: We report a case of right eyelid hemangioma in a ten-monthsold girl presenting as unilateral painless proptosis. We performed Tc-99m RBC scintigraphy and SPECT study on the patient before and after treatment with intralesional corticosteroid injection. In the patient, the tentative diagnosis of orbital hemangioma was made by MR scan and the diagnosis was established by Tc-99m RBC scintigraphy, demonstrating a typical pattern of "slightly radionuclide uptake during the perfusion, followed by a moderate uptake early blood- pool study and an intensive radionuclide uptake during the delayed blood-pool and SPECT study. After treatment , the lesion was markedly decreased and radionuclide uptake was clearly reduced in early and delayed scintigraphic images. Conclusion: This diagnostic method was found to be reliable as the pretreatment diagnosis and treatment follow-up of our case with orbital hemangioma.
