In this study, it was aimed to determine the levels of ischemia-modified albumin (IMA) in pregnant women with pre-eclampsia and their babies, and to reveal its relation morbidity and mortality. The study was included 25 mild pre-eclamptic pregnant women and their babies as a patient group, and 25 normal pregnant women and their babies as a control group; all of women were at the same age and appropriate (32-37) gestational week. IMA, complete blood count (CBC), liver function tests (LFTs), renal function tests (RFTs), albumin, and C- reactive protein levels were measured in pregnant women’s peripheral venosus blood samples before the birth and measured in their babies’ from the umblical cord and peripheral venosus blood samples at 6th and 24th hour of postnatal age. Clinical data of all groups were recorded. While IMA, LFTs and RFTs values were significantly higher in pre-eclamptic pregnant women to compare with normal pregnant women, albumin and CBC values were significantly lower. 40% of preeclamptic mothers’ babies were small for gestational age (SGA), and 12% of them were intrauterine growth retardation (IUGR). While cord blood IMA levels were significantly higher in pre-eclamptic mothers’ babies than the control group, it was seen that the difference of IMA levels at the postnatal 6th and 24th hour was disappeared. Cord blood IMA levels in the babies born SGA were significantly higher than in the babies born non-SGA. No babies died in both groups. In conclusion, this study demonstrated that blood IMA levels in pre-eclamptic pregnant women and their babies’ significantly increased. In addition, it was found that the birth rates of SGA and IUGR were increased in pre-eclamptic pregnancies and that cord blood IMA levels in the babies born SGA were also were significantly increased. We think that cord blood IMA levels may be used as an indicator of fetal ischemia and/or hypoxia in the babies with SGA; however, the results of the present study are stil preliminary and future multi-institutional, prospective and controlled studies are warranted.en_US
