Article Citation - Scopus: 1Optimisation of the inhibitory effect of Lactiplantibacillus plantarum, nisin, and lysozyme to prevent the late blowing defect in a cheese model(Czech Academy Agricultural Sciences, 2024-10-30) Akbal, Sinan; Oner, ZubeydeThe present study employed response surface methodology (RSM) to optimise the prevention of late blowing defects in cheese during storage. The aim was to enhance the inhibition of Clostridium sporogenes in cheese by manipulating three independent variables: Lactiplantibacillus plantarum (utilising two different strains, labelled as A and B, the total cheese inoculation rate was 2% overall and the A : B ratio ranging from 25% to 75%), and lysozyme (ranging from 0 to 0.2 mg center dot L-1).The response variables considered in this model cheese study included the Clostridium count, pH, and titratable acidity. The results showed that the optimal conditions for inhibiting C. sporogenes and preventing late blowing defects in cheese were achieved with an L. plantarum A : B ratio of 49.54 : 50.46%, nisin at a concentration of 1.762 mg center dot L-1,and lysozyme at 0.2 mg center dot L-1.These results demonstrated not only effective inhibition of C. sporogenes, , a pivotal contributor to late blowing defects in cheese but also indicated favourable outcomes in terms of acidity parameters, which are crucial quality criteria for cheese production. The application of Response Surface Methodology revealed that late blowing defects can be prevented using relatively lower concentrations of antimicrobial agents, along with a judicious selection of appropriate cultures. This research highlights the potential for more efficient and costeffective strategies to maintain cheese quality by minimising the risk of late blowing defects.Article Citation - WoS: 3Citation - Scopus: 3New species of gall wasps (Hymenoptera: Cynipidae: Aulacideini and Phanacidini) inducing galls on plants of the genera Sonchus and Crepis (Asteraceae) in Romania (Dobrogea Province) and notes on their parasitoids(Magnolia Press, 2024-06-17) Schiopu, Ion; Tataroglu, Musa; Katilmis, YusufTwo new species of herb gall wasps (Hym., Cynipidae) developing on plants in the genera Sonchus L. and Crepis L. Gall samples were collected from 695 different localities within the research area, comprising a total of seven provinces (Artvin, Bayburt, Giresun, Gümüşhane, Ordu, Rize and Trabzon). As a result of these investigations, a total of 90 species belonging to 18 genera were recorded. Three of these species (Synergus consobrinus Giraud in Houard, 1911; S. reinhardi Mayr, 1872; S. ruficornis Hartig, 1840) represent new records for the inquiline (Synergini) fauna of Türkiye. The host plants, distributions, and distribution maps for all of the species recorded from the Eastern Black Sea Region are provided. © 2024 Magnolia Press.Article Citation - WoS: 1Citation - Scopus: 1A democracy assessment in Türkiye within the context of law-political perceptions of jurists and politicians(Springer Vieweg-Springer Fachmedien Wiesbaden Gmbh, 2024-05-29) Keskin; FigenIn this study, an attempt will be made to draw a general framework on the main characteristics of democracy in T & uuml;rkiye by identifying both the conceptions of law and politics of the current political parties and the judges of the higher courts in T & uuml;rkiye and the position of freedoms through the rule of law and the functioning of justice. For this purpose, data was collected through in-depth interviews with MPs (16) elected from the 27th Legislative Period Parliament and jurists (14) elected from the members of the higher courts, and a comparative qualitative analysis was conducted on the basis of the participant groups. The research is analyzed under four categories: (1) Lawyers' and politicians' conceptions of law (2) Definitions and conceptions of politics by lawyers and politicians (3) Evaluation of the priority of law to politics and politics to law, (4) Evaluation of the place of freedoms and democracy in terms of the rule of law and the functioning of justice. When we look at the results of the research, in terms of the rule of law, law is prioritized over politics in the ordinary period, but politics is prioritized over law in periods of state of emergency. When a ranking of concepts is made in the context of justice and the functioning of the rule of law, it can be said that freedom is not among the prioritized concepts. The prioritization of politics in times of emergency and the inability of the concept of freedom to find a place among the priority concepts reveals an important characteristic of the understanding and practice of democracy in T & uuml;rkiye.Article Citation - WoS: 4Citation - Scopus: 3Two New Species of Oak Gall Wasp (Hymenoptera: Cynipidae, Cynipini) from Türkiye(Magnolia Press, 2024-04-09) Tataroglu, Musa; Katilmis, YusufTwo new species of the genus Andricus Hartig, 1840 (Cynipidae: Cynipini), Andricus ismaili Tataroğlu & Katılmış sp. n. asexual generation on Quercus infectoria Olivier and Andricus musaazmazi Tataroğlu & Katılmış sp. n. sexual generation on Quercus trojana Webb are described from Türkiye. The antimicrobial effect of nisin, lysozyme and water-soluble extracts (WSE) on tested Clostridium spp. strains. The minimum inhibition concentration (MIC) of nisin against vegetative cells of C. sporogenes 73, C. sporogenes 97, and C. butyricum 99 was determined to be 6.25 mu g mL(-1), 12.5 mu g mL(-1)and 6.25 mu g mL(-1), respectively. The MIC of nisin against spores of all Clostridium species/strains was found to be 1.56 mu g mL(-1). However, it was determined that lysozyme, known to be effective on gram -positive microorganisms, and did not affect Clostridium spp. vegetative cells and spores at the 10 mg mL(-1) maximum concentration. In addition to nisin and lysozyme, the anticlostridial effect of WSEs from different cheeses was also investigated. The WSEs (50 mg mL(-1)) obtained from various ripened cheeses did not have an affect on Clostridium spores, whereas they showed a strong antimicrobial effect on vegetative cells. Furthermore, the peptide profiles of these WSEs were determined in reserve -phase high performance liquid chromatography (RP-HPLC), and these peptide profiles were found to differ.Article Citation - WoS: 2Citation - Scopus: 2Development of a Multidimensional Scale for Measuring the Perceived Value of a Fitness Service(Routledge, 2024-03-05) Sevilmis, Ali; Ozdemir, Ilknur; Garcia-Fernandez, Jeronimo; Zhang, James JianhuiThe purpose was to develop the multidimensional Perceived Value Scale in Fitness Centers (PVS-FC). Following a test of content validity by a panel of experts, the preliminary PVS-FC was administered to a total of 750 members. The data were randomly split into three subsamples, one for executing an exploratory factor analysis (n = 200), the second for a confirmatory factor analysis (n = 300), and the third for a structural equation model (n = 250). The four-factor solution with 22-items produced a well-fitting measurement model, confirming the multidimensional nature of the perceived value of fitness programs. Knowing the perceptions of multidimensional perceived value in fitness centers can help to understand user behavior, and therefore predict user loyalty. So far there is no scale in the global fitness industry that analyzes multidimensional perceived value. The PVS-FC has a variety of potential applications and can serve as a framework for further empirical research in this important area. © 2024 Global Alliance of Marketing & Management Associations (GAMMA).Article Citation - WoS: 31Citation - Scopus: 36Adaptation of sea turtles to climate warming: Will phenological responses be sufficient to counteract changes in reproductive output?(John Wiley and Sons Inc, 2023-10-31) Fuentes, M. M. P. B.; Santos, A. J. B.; Abreu-Grobois, A.; Briseno-Duenas, R.; Al-Khayat, J.; Hamza, S.; Saliba, S.; Monsinjon, J.R.Sea turtles are vulnerable to climate change since their reproductive output is influenced by incubating temperatures, with warmer temperatures causing lower hatching success and increased feminization of embryos. Their ability to cope with projected increases in ambient temperatures will depend on their capacity to adapt to shifts in climatic regimes. Here, we assessed the extent to which phenological shifts could mitigate impacts from increases in ambient temperatures (from 1.5 to 3°C in air temperatures and from 1.4 to 2.3°C in sea surface temperatures by 2100 at our sites) on four species of sea turtles, under a “middle of the road” scenario (SSP2-4.5). Sand temperatures at sea turtle nesting sites are projected to increase from 0.58 to 4.17°C by 2100 and expected shifts in nesting of 26–43 days earlier will not be sufficient to maintain current incubation temperatures at 7 (29%) of our sites, hatching success rates at 10 (42%) of our sites, with current trends in hatchling sex ratio being able to be maintained at half of the sites. We also calculated the phenological shifts that would be required (both backward for an earlier shift in nesting and forward for a later shift) to keep up with present-day incubation temperatures, hatching success rates, and sex ratios. The required shifts backward in nesting for incubation temperatures ranged from −20 to −191 days, whereas the required shifts forward ranged from +54 to +180 days. However, for half of the sites, no matter the shift the median incubation temperature will always be warmer than the 75th percentile of current ranges. Given that phenological shifts will not be able to ameliorate predicted changes in temperature, hatching success and sex ratio at most sites, turtles may need to use other adaptive responses and/or there is the need to enhance sea turtle resilience to climate warming. © 2023 The Authors. The independent variables were drying temperature (50-70 degrees C) and microwave power (0-180 W), while the investigated responses were the drying time (D-t), the rehydration ratio (RR), the water-holding capacity (WHC), the antioxidant activity change (AA-PC), the total phenolic content change (TPC-PC), and the beta-carotene content change (BC-PC). The main criteria for the optimization of hybrid drying of sweet potatoes was to produce dried potatoes in the shortest drying time with a maximum RR and WHC and with minimum bioactive content (AA, TPC, and BC) loss. The optimum conditions were found to be a drying temperature of 54.36 degrees C with a microwave power of 101.97W. At this optimum point, the Dt, RR, WHC, AA-PC, TPC-PC, and BC-PC were 61.76 min, 3.29, 36.56, 31.03%, 30.50%, and 79.64%, respectively. The results of this study provide new information about the effect of the hybrid drying method (MW-HA) on the rehydration ability and bioactive compounds of sweet potatoes, as well as the optimum values of the process.
