Bitkilerde su iletiminin ilköğretim öğrencileri tarafından anlaşılma düzeyleri

Abstract

Bu çalışmanın amacı, ilköğretim öğrencilerinin bitkilerde su iletimi konusundaki bilgi düzeylerini belirlemek ve sınıflar arasındaki bilgi düzeylerini karşılaştırmaktır. Araştırma, Niğde il merkezindeki yedi farklı ilköğretim okulunda öğrenim gören 5., 6., 7. ve 8. sınıflardaki toplam 591 öğrenci ile yürütülmüştür. Araştırmada bitkilerde su iletimi konusu ile ilgili altı adet açık uçlu sorudan oluşan bir anket ile veri toplanmıştır. Öğrencilerin her bir soruya vermiş oldukları cevapları değerlendirmek amacıyla bir değerlendirme ölçeği oluşturulmuştur. Değerlendirme ölçeğinde, sorulara verilen cevaplar için birden beşe kadar kategoriler oluşturulmuş ve cevapların değerlendirilmesi bu kategorilere göre yapılmıştır. Elde edilen bulgular sayı ve yüzde olarak tablolarla sunulmuştur. Elde edilen bulgulara göre, ilköğretim öğrencilerinin vermiş oldukları cevapların gerekçelerini yeterince açıklayamadıkları ve konu ile ilgili bilgileri daha çok öğretmenlerinden edindikleri anlaşılmıştır. Öğrencilerin bitkilerdeki su iletimi konusunda bilgi düzeylerinin yeterli seviyede olmadığı ve konu ile ilgili bazı yanlış kavramalarının olduğu tespit edilmiştir. Sonuç olarak, ilköğretim öğrencilerinin bitkilerde su iletimi konusundaki bilgi düzeylerinin sınıf seviyeleri yükseldikçe arttığı gözlenmiştir. Öğrencilerde konular arasındaki bütünlüğü sağlayabilmek ve kavram yanılgılarını giderebilmek için kavram haritaları ve kavram değişim metinleri gibi yöntemlerden yararlanılmalıdır.

The purpose of this study is to determine the knowledge levels of students in elementary schools about water transport in plants and to compare the knowledge levels among different grades. The data were gathered from a total of 591 students who were in 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th grades in seven different elementary schools in the city center of Nigde. In this research, we collected the data by employing a questionnaire which is comprised of six open-ended questions about water transport in plants. The assessment scale was constructed to evaluate answers to each question by the participants. In this assessment scale, we constructed categories between 1 and 5 to demonstrate the possible categories of answers. The answers were evaluated based on these categories. We showed the obtained findings on the tables in numbers and in percentages. By these findings, it has been demonstrated that middle school students could not explain the reasons of their answers clearly and that they usually learn about this subject from teachers. We found that students do not have higher-order knowledge levels about the water transport in plants and that they demonstrated some misconceptions on the subject. As a result, it has been realized that the knowledge levels of students increase about water transport in plants when their grades get higher. We recommend that alternative methods such as problem-based teaching and conceptual change texts should be used to prevent misconceptions and to provide a better understanding about the subject for students.
