Abstract: Articulation markings in music are guidance in conveying the composer’s thoughts on performing the musical work. Written on music regarding how slurred, firm, accentuated a note or musical passage is to be performed, these markings provide the composer’s intentions on emotion and character of the work to the performer for reflecting them to the audience. Performance methods of articulation markings differ on vocal and instrumental works, and on the characteristics and timbral possibilities of the instrument as well. In works for violin, the most effective tool for articulation is the violin bow which allows presenting various musical and emotional expressions. The use of bow with various combinations of weight, length and speed provides numerous opportunities of articulation. This study presents an examination of articulation markings used in “Sonata in One Movement” for solo violin written by İlhan Baran, Turkish composer, and suggestions for the use of bow regarding these markings during performance.
