Toynbee'den Huntington'a medeniyet kavrayışı

Abstract

Araştırma konumuz olan, Toynbee'den Huntington'a doğru gerçekleşen medeniyet kavrayışı, din, siyaset, tarih, medeniyet, kültür, çatışma gibi konuların harmanlandığı bir düşünce zenginliğine bürünmüştür. Toynbee ve Huntington ağırlıklı olan bu araştırma, Spengler, Sorokin ve Fukuyama'nın medeniyet kavrayışlarının kısa bir incelemesiyle desteklenmeye çalışılmıştır. Bu tez çalışması, farklı medeniyet ve kültür tanımlarını, Toynbee, Spengler; Sorokin, Fukuyama ve Huntington'ın medeniyet kavramını ele alış ve irdeleyiş tarzlarını; ?Tarihin Sonu? ve ?Medeniyetler Çatışması? tezlerini; çatışma fikrini; din-medeniyet bağlantısını ve bu bağlamda bahsi geçen düşünürlerin görüşlerinin karşılaştırmalı bir değerlendirmesini içermektedir. Farklı alanlarda söz sahibi olan bu düşünürlerin medeniyet kavrayışları felsefî temelde bir araya getirmeye çalıştık. Siyaset bilimci olan Fukuyama ve Huntington'a göre, Batı medeniyeti eşsizdir. Toynbee, Spengler ve Sorokin ise, Batı'nın içinde bulunduğu sıkıntıları görmezden gelmemişlerdir. Özellikle Toynbee ve Huntington'ın medeniyet kavrayışlarında dinin önemli bir yeri vardır. Huntington'ın, meydan okuma-tepki, Batı'nın geleceği, medeniyetler ittifakı, dinin önemi, medeniyetler çatışması gibi fikirlerinde Toynbee'nin derin etkileri hissedilmektedir. Her iki düşünür de Batı'nın içinde bulunduğu buhranı ve güç kaybını kabullenmek istemez. Bunun üstesinden gelmek için, Toynbee, öncelikli olarak, Hıristiyanları Tanrı'nın yardımı için duaya çağırır, Huntington ise siyasi stratejiler ortaya koyar. The precession of the apprehension of civilization from Toynbee to Huntington, which is the research area of our study, holds the wealth of ideas involving subjects like religion, politics, history, and clash of civilizations. This research is mainly based on Toynbee and Huntington, but supported by a brief survey of apprehensions of civilisation in Spengler, Sorokin and Fukuyama. This thesis consists of various definitions of civilization and culture; Toynbee, Spengler, Sorokin, Fukuyama and Huntington?s accounts and analyses of the concept of civilization; ?The End of History? and ? Clash of Civilizations? theses; the idea of clash; the religion and civilization relation; as well as the evaluation of comparative ideas of these thinkers. We tried to bring together the understandings of civilisation of these thinkers, specialised on different areas, on the philosophical basis. According to Fukuyama and Huntington, who are political scientists, the Western civilization is unique. But, Toynbee, Spengler and Sorokin do not ignore difficulties that exist in the West. Particularly, in the apprehensions of civilization of Toynbee and Huntington, religion has an important place. Huntington's ideas like challenge - reaction, future of the West, agreement of civilizations, the importance of religion, and clash of civilizations are deeply influenced by Toynbee. Both thinkers do not want to accept the loss of power and crisis existing in the West. In order to overcome this issue, Toynbee calls all Christians to pray for God for His help; but Huntington puts forward some political strategies.
