Kent kimliğinin oluşumunda mahallenin etkisi: Balat, Selçuk ve Musa mahalleleri örnekleri

Abstract

Mahalleler, ilk kent devletlerinin ortaya çıktığı dönemlerden bu yana var olan ve kentlerin kimliklerine etki eden en küçük yaşam birimleridir. Tarih boyunca kentlerin en temel birimi olan mahallelerin sosyal, kültürel ve idari yapısında meydana gelen değişiklikler, tüm mahalleleri kapsayan kentin kimliğini de değiştirmektedir. Her insan ilk olarak kendi mahallesinde eğitim görmekte, sosyalleşmekte ve hayat tecrübesi kazanmaktadır. Mahallesinde kazandığı kimliği ile kent hayatına dâhil olan insan, yaşam tarzını, kültürünü ve alışkanlıklarını kent hayatına taşımaktadır. Kentlerin, sahip oldukları tarihi, kültürel ve doğal yapılarıyla çok uzun zamanda kazandıkları kimliklerini korumanın yolu ise mahallelerin kültürünü ve kimliğini korumaktan geçmektedir. Ülkemizde Osmanlı Devleti’nden bu yana, mahalle yaşantısına büyük önem verilmiştir. Mahallelerini, kendi evleri gibi koruyan ve mahalle halkının koyduğu kurallara eksiksiz uyan insanlar, kent hayatına katıldığında da mahallesinden edindiği alışkanlıkları sürdürmüş ve kentinin kimliğini korumaya çalışmıştır. Ancak Sanayi Devrimi’nden bu yana, kentler giderek büyümüş ve kimliklerini etkileyen dinamikler değişmiştir. Sınırları giderek genişleyen kentler içerisindeki mahallelerin sayısı ve nüfusu ise çeşitli nedenlerle sürekli değişmektedir. Bu durum ise mahallelerin kimliğinin ve kent içerisindeki öneminin değişmesine sebep olmaktadır.Çalışmanın temel amacı, günümüzde oluşan yeni koşullar neticesinde, mahallelerin kent içerisindeki öneminin ve kent kimliğini etkileme gücünün tespit edilmesidir. Dört bölümden oluşan çalışmanın ilk bölümünde, araştırmanın konusu, amacı, önemi ve sınırlılıkları üzerinde durulmuştur. İkinci bölümde ise mahalle kavramı, mahallenin tarihsel süreç içerisindeki gelişimi ve kimliğine etki eden faktörler anlatılmıştır. Üçüncü bölümde kent ve kent kimliği kavramları tanımlanarak, kent kimliklerini oluşturan ve etkileyen faktörler açıklanmıştır. Çalışmanın son bölümünde ise farklı coğrafyalardan mahalle örnekleri incelenerek, kent kimlikleri içerisindeki önem ve etkileri tartışılmıştır.

Neighborhoods, that have existed since the first city-state emerged are the smallest living units affecting the identity of the cities. Changes in the social, cultural and administrative structure of the neighborhoods, which have been the most basic unit of cities throughout history, also change the identity of the city, which covers all neighborhoods. Every person is educated, socialized and gains life experience first in his/her own neighborhood. The person who is included in the city life with the identity he/she gained in his/her neighborhood brings his/her lifestyle, culture and habits to the city life. The way of preserving the identities of cities with their historical, cultural and natural structures that they have gained in a very long time is to protect the culture and identity of the neighborhoods.Since the Ottoman State in our country, much attention has been paid to neighborhood life. People who protect their neighborhoods like their own homes and follow the rules completely set by the people of the neighborhood, continued their habits from the neighborhood when they joined the city life and tried to protect the identity of their city. However, since the Industrial Revolution, cities have grown increasingly and the dynamics affecting their identity have changed. The number and population of the neighborhoods within the cities whose borders are expanding constantly has changed for various reasons. This situation has caused to change the identity of the neighborhoods and their importance in the city.The main purpose of the study is to determine the importance of the neighborhoods in the city and the power to affect the urban identity as a result of the new conditions that ocur today. In the first part of the study, which consists of four parts, the subject, purpose, importance and limitations of the research were emphasized. In the second part, the concept of neighborhood, the development of the neighborhood in the historical process and the factors affecting its identity were explained. In the third section, the factors that make up and affect the urban identities were explained defining the concepts of the city and urban identities. In the last part of the study, by examining samples of neighborhoods from different geographies, their importance and effects within urban identities were discussed.
