Halikarnassoslu Dionysios’ta biçem ve hypsos

Abstract

Bu makalede, Halikarnassoslu Dionysios’un hypsos (yücelik) kategorisini üslup türleri ve kompozisyon teorisiyle nasıl ilişkilendirdiği sorusu ele alınacaktır. Dionysios hitabet sanatı üzerine yazdığı eserlerde, özellikle Klasik Dönem hatip ve yazarlarının biçemlerini değerlendirirken hypsos ve hyps?los terimlerini sıklıkla kullanmıştır. Augustus dönemi Grek klasisizminin temsilcilerinden biri olarak Dionysios, Klasik Hellen yazınının büyük bir kısmını yüce (hyps?los) olarak değerlendirmektedir. Dionysios hypsos kavramını çoğunlukla biçem ve kompozisyon bağlamında kullanmış olmasına karşın, ona göre hypsos büyük ya da yüksek stille bir ve aynı şey değildir. Hypsos kategorisi figür, diksiyon ve kompozisyonu da barındıran stilin yanı sıra düşüncenin büyüklüğü ve duyguyu da konu edinir.

In this paper, I will discuss the question of how Dionysius of Halicarnassus relates the category of the hypsos (the sublime) to the types of styles and his theory of composition. In his rhetorical works, he frequently uses the terms hypsos and hyps?los when evaluating especially the styles of classical orators and writers. As a representative of Greek classicism in Augustan period, Dionysius considers so much of ancient Greek writing to be sublime. Even though Dionysius utilizes the concept of the sublime mainly in the context of composition and style, for him hypsos is not identical with grand or elevated style. It also concerns the greatness of thought and emotion, as well as style involving figures, diction and composition.
