Changing roles and missions of university in information society

Abstract

The universities are considered as significant and respectful institutions. They are seen as a leading indicator of the development in the society. Universities produce and spread the knowledge for the social and economic well-being of societies locally, regionally and globally. Based on the Graz Declaration by EUA, the roles of universities are as following: (1) keeping universities as public responsibility, (2) considering researching as an inherent element of higher education, (3) increasing the academic quality by establishing authoritative institutions, (4) improving the dynamism and social aspects, (5) supporting the development of a political structure for Europe with the perspective of quality assurance, and (6) being in the center of the reforms. Currently, the responsibilities of universities grouped into such three main parts as (1) teaching-training, (2) academic research and (3) social services. The universities are organized in order to carry out the given functions. In other words, the universities are organized based on their functions. Considering their functions the universities divided into two groups as (1) mass education universities and (2) research universities. These teaching-training and academic research functions intertwined in our universities. This shows that our universities have not organized based on their functions, in other words they organized based on the compound of teaching-training, academic research and social services.
