The effects of burnishing and other conventional machining processes (grinding, reaming, drilling, turning, and honing) on thesurface characteristic properties of mild steel wereinvestigated and compared in terms of surface roughness, circularity (roundness), and cylindricity in this study. Theeffect of these processes on the microstructures was alsoexamined to understand the relationship between the machiningprocess and surface characteristic properties. Allsurface machining processes were performed under constantdepth of cut, cutting speed, and feed rate. The highesthardness was obtained on the burnished surface. Experimentalresults also showed that the roller burnishing methodis themost favorable post-machining process methodfor obtaining optimum surface topography on mild steel.&COPY Carl Hanser Verlag GmbH & Co.
