Missed Nursing Care and Its Causes and Effects on Moral Distress in Neonatal Intensive Care Nurses
(Wiley, 2025-02-28) Bakirlioglu, Burcu; Cetinkaya, Bengu; Teki, Rabia Nur
Background: Deficiencies emerge in the care provided by nurses because of the complex treatment plans, shortage of labour resources and communication problems in neonatal intensive care units (NICUs). Knowing how to provide quality patient care but being unable to maintain it because of individual or institutional issues can lead to moral distress among nurses. Aim: This study aimed to examine missed nursing care in NICUs and its relationship with the moral distress experienced by nurses. Study Design: This was a cross-sectional study. This study included a sample of 153 NICU nurses. The data were collected online between January and May 2024 using a descriptive information form, the Missed Care Survey-Paediatric Form, and the Moral Distress Scale-Revised for Paediatric Nurses. Results: The mean age of the participants was 31.22 years, and on average, they cared for 3.42 +/- 0.96 patients per day. The medical condition of the child under care (t = 2.954, p < .001), duration of working in the NICU (F = 15.901, p < .001), inadequate number of nurses (F = 3.626, p = .029) and job satisfaction (F = 3.359, p = .037) were listed as variables affecting the reasons for missed nursing care. Communication (beta = .275, p = .018) and labour resources (beta = .216, p = .021), subdimensions of the Missed Care survey used in the study, were predictive factors that positively affected moral distress. Conclusions: The factors associated with missed care should be explored as strategies to reduce moral distress. Managers should focus on integrating effective communication techniques into nursing care and increasing the labour resources to reduce missed nursing care, thus improving the moral distress levels of NICU nurses. Relevance to Clinical Practice: Understanding the factors associated with missed care and developing related strategies can complement the efforts of NICU managers, educators and nurses in reducing moral distress.

Knee Osteoarthritis Emotional Meaning Scale Development Study
(Wiley, 2025-02-27) Azak, Arife; Platin, Nurgun
Background: Knee osteoarthritis (OA) is a chronic, long-term disease with both physical and psychosocial consequences. In determining the treatment programs of patients diagnosed with knee OA and ensuring compliance with treatment, it is important to understand the emotional attitudes and experiences of patients regarding the physical and psychosocial effects of the disease. This study aimed to create a scale for evaluating the emotional attitudes of patients with knee OA as they manage and cope with the condition. Methods: The research was a validity and reliability study designed using methodological methods. Study data were collected from the Department of Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation at a university hospital in Turkey between November and December 2024. The study sample included 90 patients diagnosed with knee OA. To establish the validity of the scale, content validity and construct validity were assessed. Internal consistency was determined using Cronbach's alpha reliability coefficient, item-total score correlations, and the Hotelling T2 test. The test-retest method was applied to determine the scale's stability over time. Results: The content validity index (CVI) values for the draft form of the scale ranged between 0.91 and 1.00. The exploratory factor analysis indicated that the scale consisted of a single factor, which explained 41.62% of the total variance. The scale demonstrated strong reliability, with a Cronbach's alpha coefficient of 0.86, item-total correlations ranging from 0.36 to 0.73, and a significant Hotelling T2 value (P < 0.001). Test-retest analysis indicated a positive and highly significant correlation for the overall scale (r = 0.964, P < 0.001). Conclusion: The knee osteoarthritis emotional meaning scale (KOEMS) was demonstrated to be a valid and reliable instrument for this patient sample.

(Wiley, 2023-12-07) Ceylan, Hatice; Yangoz, Sefika Tugba; Ozer, Zeynep
AimTo explore relationship coping strategies and sexual dysfunction, and the predictive factors of sexual dysfunction in adults receiving haemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis.BackgroundSexual dysfunction is a common problem in adults receiving haemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis. This problem may be related to psychological and physiological conditions. However, the association between psychological conditions such as coping strategies and sexual dysfunction is not clearly understood.DesignThis study is a cross-sectional study.MethodsThe data were collected from November 2021 to July 2022 using the General Information Form, Arizona Sexual Experiences Scale: Female and Male Versions, and the Ways of Coping Inventory. Correlation and multiple regression analyses were conducted to investigate the relationship between coping strategies and sexual dysfunction.Reporting MethodSTROBE checklist.ResultsA total of 110 adults, 67 on haemodialysis and 43 on peritoneal dialysis, who met the eligibility criteria were included in this study. The optimistic, helpless and submissive approach sub-dimensions of coping strategies had positive correlation with sexual dysfunction in adults receiving haemodialysis. Among the sub-dimensions of the ways of coping inventory, helpless approach was positive predictor and seeking social support was negative predictor of sexual dysfunction in adults receiving haemodialysis. The coping strategies were not predictors of sexual dysfunction for adults receiving peritoneal dialysis.ConclusionsThis study showed that helpless coping strategy increases sexual dysfunction, and seeking social support decreases sexual dysfunction in haemodialysis.Implications for the profession and/or patient careAccording to this study, social support is effective coping strategy for reducing sexual dysfunction. Education and support for effective coping strategies should be provided to dialysis patients by healthcare professionals at the start of dialysis treatment. Effective coping strategies should be integrated into routine care standards and nursing or hospital policies.Patient or Public ContributionAdults receiving haemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis were involved in this study.

Determining intensive care unit nurses’ perceptions and practice levels of spiritual care in Turkey
(Wiley, 2012-11-22) Turan, Turkan; Karamanoglu, Ayla Yavuz
Abstract PURPOSE: The purpose of this study is to determine the validity and reliability of the Turkish version of the Spiritual Care Perceptions and Practices Scale and to evaluate factors that may be effective in providing spiritual care by general intensive care unit (ICU) nurses. BACKGROUND: Spiritual needs are necessary to offset spiritual deficiencies or support moral strength. During hospitalization, patients with critical conditions and their families tend to become anxious because of fear of the unknown and an uncertain future. Spiritual issues become prominent concerns for these patients and their families. METHOD: The data of the study were collected from a university hospital, two public hospitals and two private hospitals. A total of 170 nurses were in the ICU of these hospitals, and 123 nurses (79·4%), agreed to participate and, were included in this study. Prior to the study, an information sheet was provided to all nurses to explain the purpose and procedures of the survey. The demographic data form of ICU nurses and the Nurses' Spiritual Care Perceptions and Practices Scale were used for data collection. RESULTS: A statistically significant difference was found between the marital status of the nurses and the total scale mean score. It was also determined that ICU nurses are in a better position regarding their perception levels of spiritual care compared to their practice levels of spiritual care, and nurses with a higher perception of spiritual care also have higher scores in the practice of spiritual care. CONCLUSIONS: ICU nurses were found to be inadequate in spiritual care practices. Study findings may be used to improve the support of nurses, to ensure sensitive spiritual care in their daily practices. RELEVANCE TO CLINICAL PRACTICE: ICU nurses should be aware of the importance of spiritual care and develop tools for assessing the spiritual needs of patients.
